A Taxi Medical
This is a medical evaluation a taxi driver must undergo to verify fitness. Before a licence is granted, you must prove you are physically well enough to operate a vehicle. If you operate a private hire car or hackney carriage, then you must get a medical assessment according to council requirements.
The purpose of this exam is to ensure the safety of the driver and other road users. Therefore, you must pass your medical to meet DVLA standards. Doreen Medicals is a leading provider of taxi driver medical assessments in the UK. Check the list of councils that have approved our driver medicals.
The Need for a Health Check
Besides medical evaluations for licence requirements, taxi drivers need regular check-ups to make certain they are in good health. When you are responsible for other people’s safety, you cannot afford to be reckless with your health. A comprehensive physical examination can detect health issues and decrease the risk of emergencies.
Some conditions that could prevent you from getting a taxi licence include heart problems, diabetes, head injuries, progressive degenerative illnesses, and epilepsy. Certain medications can also cause you to fail your medical. Apart from your physical well-being, your mental health matters as well.
What to Expect from the Medical
Our GMC registered doctors conduct taxi medicals depending on your licence requirements. A typical evaluation takes 20 minutes or less. However, this duration changes with individuals. During the assessment, the physician will check for high blood pressure to ensure it’s normal. The doctor administers a urine test to check for alcohol, drugs and diabetes.
Vision assessments are other requirements of driver medicals. An evaluation of your medical history is necessary when applying for a private hire taxi licence. Note that past medical conditions might necessitate additional tests. If you pass the assessment, the physician will complete the D4 medical report.
